    Top 10 Bakeries in Perth

    We love a good loaf, and even better we love copping one from the independent baker down the street. And around Perth these days we seem to be getting more and more great places to grab a super-fresh loaf of bread from, along with plenty of other sweet treats – here’s a few of our faves.

    North Street Store

    We can’t shut up about North Street Store – not that anyone really needs telling at this point. In spite of a few vocal locals, these legends are still going strong, baking some of the best loaves in town. With the addition of sister store Little Loaf Bakery in South Freo, these guys will be pumping out even more of the good stuff. And while we’ve waxed lyrical about the cinnamon buns, and the porchetta rolls, the fougasse is the absolute perfect bread to share with mates in the sunshine, with a bottle of something good.

    16 North Street, Cottesloe


    Grain Bakery

    This small, family-run bakery may have only opened at the start of the year but it’s already become a huge hit around its Lathlain location. And a large part of that is due toe place being steeped in owners the Pallot family’s history. They use decades-old family recipes, and produce some of the best sourdough going around Perth at the moment. Beware their irresistible pastry treats though!

    Wild Bakery

    An absolute favourite for a Saturday afternoon lunch after stopping by the Subi Farmer’s Market – a few slices of Wild Bakery’s quinoa loaf with some fresh cultured butter. High key recommend. These South Freo faves are all about funky fermentation, which can also be beneficial for those with sensitive tums.

    Strange Grains

    Baked in a dedicated gluten-free environment, Strange Grains is the answer to a coeliac’s prayers. All their loaves are hand-made by skilled bakers, without preservatives, stabilisers, eggs, dairy, corn or sugar – not to mention all the other treats they have available. Pies, cakes, pastries – you name it, they make it gluten free.

    Fable

    Clayton and Lena’s backyard bread operation was inspired by Lena’s childhood in her family’s traditional northern German bakery. After experimenting with sourdough, the couple decided to extend their baking from friends and family, to us, lucky ducks! Head to their website to pre-order their artisanal loaves for pickup from a number of locations, or head to one of their farmers market pop-ups.



    Bread In Common

    Yep, we’re still obsessed with Bread In Common’s common loaf. Slow fermented and hand-shaped, this simple wood-fired bread always has a place in our hearts. Paired with their sweet garlic butter with fennel salt… oof. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

    Miller And Baker

    Miller And Baker have become an instant fave amongst the Highgate massive with killer coffee and their freshly baked sourdough made with flour milled on site. Their New American Stone Mill is the first of its kinda in WA, and you can taste the difference. Their almond croissants are delicious, and this whole area at the top of Lake Street is better of for having Miller And Baker doing their thing!

    Knead. Bread & Coffee

    We recently gave Knead. a shoutout in our article looking at Scarborough cafes (check it here), but it stands up very comfortably as just a bakery in its own right. In a very short time they’ve built up a devoted and loving community of repeat customers thanks to friendly service combined with of course, great bread! They’ve even developed a special Scarborough Sourdough just for the locals – get amongst it.

    Chu Bakery

    If you want a baguette from Chu, you might have to set an alarm. Perhaps more known for their picture-perfect pastries, it might just be because hungry locals leave them with bare shelves. If you’ve slept in and missed out on a loaf, you can sample the goods with one of their toasted sandwiches, baguettes or loaded toasts – just make sure to eat it the preferred way: laying down under a tree in Hyde Park with a coffee in hand and a doughnut for after.

    Mary Street Bakery

    Every time we might feel like getting a bit cynical about Mary Street… you remember just how damn good they are. For years, that polenta loaf has been my go-to pickup en route to a family lunch. Appear at a dinner party with a loaf of that (and maybe a few doughnuts…) and you’d be the guest of honour.
